Don’t Sell Your Junk Car Until You Know These 5 Things

· 2 min read

We’ve bought over 100,000 junk cars. Here’s what we wish every seller knew before they sold their junk car

1. Get Your Title Sorted First

If the title isn’t in your name, you can’t sell the car. Even if you’ve already paid for the car, the title must be in your name. Handle the transfer or get a replacement title before trying to sell. A replacement title costs $30 to $40 and you’ll lose $100 to $200 selling your car without it. As long as you can prove ownership, you can get a replacement.

2. Sell in Spring or Summer, if You Can

Metal demand is higher in warmer months, which means better base offers. But if your car is racking up code violations, your apartment complex needs the spot, or you are about to move, don’t wait and risk the fines. Selling your junk car now still puts money in your pocket.

3. Fix It if It’s Cheap Enough

Figure out if it’s worth repairing and selling your car used. If your car needs a $200 repair and you can sell it for $2,000 after as a used vehicle, scrapping it doesn’t make sense. Not sure? Give us a call and we’ll give you our honest opinion. The truth is, most junk cars aren’t worth repairing. That’s usually how they ended up junk cars in the first place.

4. Watch Out for the Bait and Switch Scam

It’s the biggest scam in the industry. A company quotes you a high price on the phone, shows up, hooks up your car, and then says something like “actually, it’s worth less than we offered.” Now you either accept the lower price or have to start all over. Be upfront about your vehicle’s condition, verify that you will be paid what you were quoted if it’s accurate, make sure there are no hidden fees.

5. Avoid Fly-by-Night Buyers That Will Be Gone Tomorrow

“We buy cars” signs along highways and telephone poles are usually fly-by-night middlemen. They try to buy your car cheap, then flip it to a local junkyard or metal facility for a profit. You’re then paying for their cut. Junk Car Reaper works with licensed auto recyclers, parts buyers, car auctions, and metal facilities directly to get you the best price possible.

Following those 5 tipes before you sell your junk car will go a long way in maximizing your return and having a great experience.
