Important Distinction

Scrap Value vs. Junk Car Value

The number you receive from the calculator is the vehicle's base metal value. It sets the floor for how much your vehicle is worth if it were valued only for its metal. It's based purely on weight × current per-ton price.

Your actual junk car value is almost always higher because buyers will pay for usable parts such as the engine, transmission, catalytic converter, body panels, electronics, wheels, and more. A complete, running vehicle can be worth 3–10x its scrap metal value.

Therefore the scrap value is the floor, not the ceiling. We recommend you use this calculator to know your minimum, then get an actual offer to see what your car is really worth.

Beyond the Calculator

What Else Affects Your Car's Value?

While scrap weight sets the floor, these factors determine how far above it your car can land.

Running Condition High Impact

A running vehicle is worth 2–5x more than a non-running one. This is the single biggest value-add beyond scrap weight.

Catalytic Converter High Impact

They contain platinum, palladium, and rhodium which are valuable precious metals. A factory cat on a truck or SUV can be worth $100–$250 alone.

Parts Demand Medium Impact

Most scrap yards are flooded with parts to domestic vehicles but pay a premium for foreign and import model parts.

Title Status Medium Impact

Selling a junk car with no title usually means a deduction of ~$160 on average, while a replacement title only costs $15–$50 at your DMV.

Location Medium Impact

Cities near steel mills and ports will pay more. A $50–$200 swing is common between regions.

Completeness High Impact

Missing engine: −$200–$500. Missing wheels: −$80–$200. And a stripped shell is worth scrap weight only.

This calculator is very accurate for determining the scrap value of a car. We use manufacturer curb weights and constantly update scrap rates as they change.
You can still use the calculator by entering its weight manually. You can find its curb weight on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb or search online.
Yes. Scrap steel prices fluctuate monthly based on global demand and seasonal activity. We update rates regularly.
If it's a stripped shell, scrapping makes sense. But if major components are intact, selling to a buyer like us will net more.
